Dubbo
Dubbo, New South Wales is located in the Orana Region and has a population of nearly 33,000 residents. The city is served by three major highways, Mitchell, Newell, and Golden. Dubbo is sometimes called the “crossroads of New South Wales.” In addition to the major highways, Dubbo is a rail freight hub. National highways lead to Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, and Adelaide. Over 40,000 years ago, the indigenous Australians inhabited the land that is home to Dubbo today. The first European explorer of record was John Oxley, who reported on the area in 1818. Robert Dulhunty occupied property here in 1828, and claimed squatters’ rights after the legislature passed the Squatting Act in 1836. Dulhunty favored aboriginal names for his properties because of his close friendship with the indigenous people. Dubbo is thought to be a misspelling of the Wiradjuri word ‘thubbo,’ which possibly meant ‘red earth.’ In around 1840, John Maugham had a 26,000 acre sheep station and built a home called Dundullimal Homestead. The building still stands today and is open to the public. In 1846, government installed a police station, jail, and courthouse in the city. A constable took up residence, even though there were only four buildings in the new town.
