Moree

Residing within Moree Plains Shire, Moree, New South Wales is on the Mehi River. The plains surrounding the large town are renowned for their rich black soil, making Moree an important agricultural centre in the state. Prehistory, the Kamilaroi people inhabited the area where Moree is today. Their descendants still live in the town. In 1832, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell was sent to explore land discovered by escaped convict George Clarke. Clarke was living near a river called the Kindur, with the Kamilaroi, when he was recaptured. Pastoral runs were established after Mitchell’s exploration of the area. Moree was one that was founded in 1844. It was named for the aboriginal term that meant ‘long waterhole’ or ‘rising sun,’ depending on the interpreter. In 1851, the Brand family built a general store, and added a post office the following year. After her husband’s death, Mary Brand opened an inn in Moree. In 1895, wells drilled into the Great Artesian Basin began providing water to the town. Today, those wells yield more than 13 million litres a day. Wheat and pecans were commercially grown after World War II, and in 1994, an olive oil company began producing oil from previously planted olive groves.

Pecan Nut Farm

The most productive pecan plantation in the Southern Hemisphere is in Moree. Trawalla Pecan Nut Farm allows you to tour their facilities, taste the nuts, and purchase from a wide variety of pecan products.
