Moruya Airport
Moruya Airport, New South Wales is located about 6.5 kilometres from Moruya, to the northeast. Previously known as RAAF Base Moruya, it was built at Moruya Heads by the RAAF in 1942. In addition to being an airport for the RAAF aircraft, the Moruya Base was the home of the No 11 Operational Base Unit that provided support to the planes. During World War II, the airfield was used from time to time for coastal patrols and a refueling point for in-transit aircraft. In October of 1944, it became an emergency landing ground only for RAAF planes. When the Eurobadalla Shire Council took over possession of the Moruya Airport, it set about to enlarge the terminal and the apron, build a parallel taxiway, and extend the three runways. Regional Express has flights to Sydney and Merimbula from the Moruya Airport. The indigenous people residing here were the Walbanga and Brinja-Yuin. The indigenous Australian word ‘mherroyah’ is thought to be the basis for the name Moruya, and it means “home of the black swan.” The town of Moruya, near the airport, has a black swan as an emblem. Residents of the town number near 2,500 according to the census.
