When the railway line from Hornsby to Homebush was built in the 1880s, estates were subdivided and the land was sold to the colonial government. The railway bridge across the Parramatta was completed in 1886. West Ryde was one of the stations on the route. West Ryde was officially recognized as the name of the community by the post office in 1926.
