Yamba

The northern town of Yamba in New South Wales resides on the mouth of the Clarence River. It is in the LGA of the Clarence Valley Council, and had a population of about 5,500 at the 2006 census. During holiday season, the population nearly triples. It relies heavily on tourism and fishing as foundations of the economy. In recent years, Yamba has become a retirement destination for baby boomers, those born in the 1950s. In its earliest history, Matthew Flinders landed on the headlands in 1799. He dismissed the area as too turbulent and dangerous and deemed it unsuitable for further examination. He was proven incorrect when timber harvesting gained importance in the 1830s. In 1861, a town site was platted and in 1862, the post office was completed. It was originally called Shoal Bay; however, the name Yamba was officially adopted in 1885, when the population was about 340 people. There are two theories on the meaning of the word ‘Yamba.’ One is that it meant ‘headland’ in the Aboriginal language; however, J. S. Ryan disputes this. The claim is that it is derived from ‘yumbah,’ an edible shellfish, something like an oyster and about the size of a man’s hand.

Ride the Ferry

Clarence River Ferries, the MV Mirigini and the MV Clarence Head operate a daily commuter service between Iluka and Yamba. Scenic cruises are operated three times a week, with Wednesday and Friday cruises providing historical commentary and sailing to Harwood Island. On Sunday, you can enjoy live music aboard the two ferries on their 30-kilometre round trip. The galley supplies delicious homemade food, and there is a fully licensed bar on both ferries.

Drive to the Aboriginal Sites

The Lower Clarence Aboriginal Tourist Site Drive was a community project started in 1992. Yamba residents wanted to highlight the importance of the Aboriginal culture in the Clarence River Valley. The self-guided drive will take you to various sites where you can discover aboriginal history and heritage. The project, the first of its kind in Australia, was dedicated to Mrs. Annie Randall, of the Yaegl tribe.
