Capalaba, Queensland is a Brisbane suburb, in the southeastern part of the city. It is located within the LGA of Redland City. At the latest census, there were over 17,000 residing in the suburb on Tingalpa Creek. The Aboriginal word meant, “a place of possums.” The early history of the community is one of little or no growth, although the Cleveland Road was well used by the timber cutters. Farming of Fruits, vegetables, and dairy cattle were the main industries. The railroad bypassed the little town, and deterred further growth until the 1930s. In 1934, a school of arts was opened, and in 1949, residential subdivisions were platted and commenced. By the early 1950s, there were shopping centres and drive-in theatres. In 1981, a much larger drive-in shopping centre was built and the town soon became a shopping hub of Redlands Shire. The mid to late 20th century saw many changes within the suburb, including an additional Catholic primary school, and state high school, four churches, and a cultural centre/auditorium. The Redlands Indigiscapes Centre is a reserve on the tributaries of the Tingalpa Creek, and it is just one of several in the suburb. Some of the subdivisions of the suburb are still used for horticulture.
