Clermont
Located in the Isaac region of Queensland, Clermont is an agricultural town with a population of just less than 2,000 residents. It is considered a hub for the huge coal mining companies. Agricultural enterprises also rely on Clermont for commercial activities. Ludwig Leichhardt was the first of explorer through the region in the 1840s. The discovery of gold in 1861 established the little town. In 1864, the town reserve was proclaimed, but was preceded by a gold field declaring in 1862. It was named for Clermont-Ferrand, France. After the discovery of gold, copper was unearthed. Many of the miners were Chinese, which led to dissension and racial riots. The riots culminated in Chinese being forcibly removed from the area in 1888. In 1884, the railway extended into Clermont; however, passenger service has never been provided. The original location of the town was on a billabong, but substantial flooding occurred in 1864 and 1896. In 1916, a flood destroyed 65 lives and is one of Australia’s worst recorded disasters. Many of the wooden buildings of the town were moved by steam engines to a new town site higher up. George Pullar, a local photographer, took many photos of the moving buildings, and published them in a book.
Arts & Music Festival
Clermont is the host city of the Brigalow Beatz Arts & Music Festival. Held annually in October, the festival is on the Clermont Showgrounds. In past years, musical groups such as Boy and Bear, Emma Louise, Black Sorrows, Busby Marous, and Gossling have performed and provided entertainment for many people. In addition to great music concerts, there are music workshops, market stalls with food and beverages, and games and fun for all.
Koala Venture
Blair Athol and Clermont Coal Mines are involved with the University of Queensland in Rio Tinto’s Koala Venture, Australia’s longest running research study on wild koala populations. The parties involved watch the habitats of koalas, their breeding habits, and more and have noticed a distinct increase in the population as they establish permanent habitat on the rehabilitated land around the old Blair Athol mine. The coal mining companies are also involved in preservation of the indigenous population’s culture and heritage.
