Tieri

Tieri is in the wild remote area of north-western Queenslad, Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Capella and Emerald, 35 and 85km away respectively. Founded in 1981 as a dormitory town for the local coal mine, it quickly swelled to its current size of around 2,000 inhabitants. However, forget any image in your mind of a redneck country backwater – the 2001 census revealed the town to have the highest median income of any postcode in Queensland, and the influx of money means it’s far better heeled than the dust-blown country town you might expect.Tieri still maintains its quaint small-town charm, with streets named after the cattle stations which once surrounded the current site of the town. Most of the social life centres around the main street’s shopping and recreational facilities. Tieri Sport and Recreation Centre is the hub of the town, with everything from kids’ volleyball practices to adult fun runs bringing the town together. The four parks, including a small skate park aimed at teenagers, offer great facilities for a town of its small size. During the hot summer months, neighbours gather around the BBQ pits of Lions Park every night.

Things to do in Tieri Queensland

There are numerous large dams around Tieri, which make for an interesting day out. Bundoora Dam, built in 1979 to supply water to the German Coal Mine, is an interesting piece of engineering in its own right, and has now been given a small information centre for curious visitors. Alternatively, the Theresa Creek and Fairbairn Dams both provide water sports facilities, or visit the Mackenzie River for freshwater fishing opportunities.

The Pioneer Village in nearby Capella is a museum of agriculture of the Central Highlands, commemorating the area’s most important industry after mining. It holds a unique collection of farming machinery, such as tractors and threshers, from the early 1950s broadacre farming experiments. There’s also a huge wooden homestead – the largest of its kind in the whole country - restored to its former glory and preserved just as it would have been in 1889.
