Exmouth, Western Australia
Located on the tip of the North West Cape, Exmouth, Western Australia is a town of about 1900 people. The local government area is the Shire of Exmouth. The town was founded in the late 1960s as a support facility for the United States Navy. The Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt is located near the town. In the late 1970s, the town became important to the U.S. Air Force, as well. Air Force personnel were assigned to a science facility, the Learnmonth Solar Observatory. The Observatory is operated joint by the Air Force and the Ionospheric Prediction Service of Australia.
In 1942, after retreated from Java, the Allied naval forces needed a forward submarine base. At the time, submarines were the sole offense against the Japanese. Darwin and Broome were both considered too exposed to air attack, so Exmouth was chosen as the site for an unmotorized refueling barge on Exmouth Gulf. Allies already had a seaplane tender in place in the gulf. The base’s codename was Potshot and it served as a rest camp for submariners on the USS Pelias. Fighter defense for the base was accommodated by the construction of an airfield, which is now RAAF Learnmonth.
