Learmonth Airport, Western Australia
Learmonth Airport is a collaborative joint Air Force Base of the RAAF and civilian airport. Located near Exmouth, it is considered one of three of RAAF’s ‘bare bases.’ The Air Force base has a ‘skeleton’ caretaker staff that maintains it in peacetime. It is not manned by Air Force units. There is an RAAF Weapons Range southwest of the bare base, also named Learmonth.
During World War II, an airfield was established at Exmouth Gulf that was nearly secret. It was maintained by the RAAF No. 76 Operational Base Unit and the United States. The code name was Potshot. After the war, the base was further developed and named for Wing Commander Charles Learmonth who was killed in a flying accident in 1944.
The civilian portion of the airport is serviced by QantasLink and Skywest Airlines, flying to Broome, Paraburdoo, and Perth. In the 2011 fiscal year, nearly 56,000 revenue passengers flew through Learmonth Airport. In addition to regularly scheduled airline flights, charter flights and helicopters use the airport, as do crop dusting enterprises. In 2008 and 2012, civilian commercial airliners made emergency landings at Learmonth Airport, one for undisclosed reasons, and one for an emergency refueling stop.
Cape Range National Park
If you like adventure vacations, this is your spot. You can hike through the impressive gorges, walk the bush, snorkel the amazingly clear waters, or pursue the rare black-footed rock wallaby. Mangrove Bay is teeming with waterbirds and waders. A bird hide will allow you to see them more closely. A boat tour along Yardie Creek is a good way to possibly see the black-footed rock wallaby, as well as other interesting features of the gorge.
Humpback Whales
There are few sights in nature more impressive than watching a humpback whale leap from the depths of the ocean, flip in midair, and dive back down. These giants journey along the Exmouth coast near Ningaloo Marine Park, near Learmonth Airport. The pods move between summer breeding grounds and winter feeding grounds in the Antarctic. June and November are the best months to see the massive mammals.
