Within two years, many more rich finds brought miners and prospectors to the area. By 1897, residences and businesses were built, and the town was gazetted in 1898. The Sons of Gwalia gold mine was, for a time, the most famous in the world. This was for two reasons. One, it was managed and administrated by Herbert Hoover, future president of the United States. Two, it produced more gold than any other mine in the world. Today, Christmas Island refugees live at a former mining camp in the town.
