Welshpool, Western Australia
Welshpool is an inner suburb of Perth, the capital city of the state. It is located to the southeast of the Perth CBD, within the City of Canning. Welshpool is a major industrial area of Perth and is served by the Welshpool railway station. In the 1880s, the road leading to this community was named Welshpool Road. One story states that Benjamin Dewing, an early market gardener, was born in Wales, in Welshpool. In 1908, the local residents wanted the railway station name changed to Canterbury. They were unsuccessful, and the railway station is called Welshpool to this day.
The LGA in which Welshpool resides was established in 1871 under District Roads Act 1871. The district was abolished and divided in two. In 1961 Canning Road District was ruled a shire under the new Local Government Act 1960. It was declared a town in 1970 and a city in 1978. Today, there are approximately 86,000 people residing in the City of Canning. The City has provided leisure facilities for its residents, including Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes, Canning Aquatic Centre, and Queens Park Recreation Center. There are 4 wards and 15 suburbs located in the Local Government Area.
It’s a short drive into Perth’s CBD, where a myriad of attractions can be found.
